MIDLANDS MAGIC
Art and Photography Competition 2025 / 2026
In a small village tucked between the misty hills of KwaHaza in the KZN Midlands, a teenage boy picked up his phone and took a photo of his grandmother’s hands—weathered, strong, and still busy kneading dough for the morning bread. That image, full of love and quiet resilience, told a story no words could capture.
A young girl in Nottingham Road, too shy to speak in class, painted the green curve of a hill she walks every day on her way to school—adding bold sunrays and birds that don’t exist, but should. When she paints, she tells the truth of what she hopes for.
A frequent visitor to the iconic Howick Falls stood near the edge of the platform, canvas balanced on a rickety easel, paintbrush in hand. The water roared, just as it had when his grandfather used to bring him here as a child. “This place,” his grandfather would say, “remembers everything.” He never forgot those words. Now, years later, his brush traced a swirl of blues and silvers across the canvas, every stroke unearthing memories of old. His painting reflects what Midlands Magic means to him: not just scenery, but story, emotion, and connection to place
Art is how we see, how we feel, and how we remember. It captures the soul of a place.
Midlands Magic isn’t just the beauty of the landscapes—it’s the spirit of its people, the stories in their eyes, the colours of their memories, and the quiet power of the everyday. This campaign invites everyone—from hobbyist photographers to seasoned painters—to show us their Midlands.
Through art, we rediscover the magic that’s always been here, waiting to be seen.
